Re-Fresh: Young Person's Peer Support Group

The Re-Fresh Peer Support group meets Wednesdays from 6.15 – 7.30 at Slynedales. The group is for young people aged 12 to 17 years affected by cancer or bereavement through any reason.

This means that if a friend or family member has cancer or someone close to you dies we can support you.

We come together in a safe, non-judgemental space and sessions are led by young people who are fully trained Peer Supporters. The aim the sessions include a variety of activities including listening to music, playing games and being creative with the aim of having fun, building friendships and boosting confidence.

Young people also have the option of sharing their stories and experiences to enlighten and support other members.

On occasion we also like to adventure out into the community to escape the stress of home life and over the summer we organise an exciting program of activities and trips.

Re-Fresh is part of our Children and Young Person's Service which provides counselling and play therapy for young people affected by cancer and bereavement, either themselves of in their family.

For more information about the group please contact Lou Andrews on 01524 381820 or email

Not every young person who has been bereaved or affected by cancer and life-limiting illness needs one-to-one therapy or a regular group to attend. In 2019 we started to pilot a new service to those aged 12yrs (and in high school) to 17yrs to offer a wide range of small group activities ranging from quad biking to glamping at Alton Towers.

Based on the success of the summer project we now aim to offer more regular activities during the school holidays and you will find these advertised through Facebook and on this page.

If you would like to find out more about our Activity Group or you would like to book places please email or phone 01524 381820

GET INVOLVED! Young People's Action Research Group

In 2017 we were fortunate to be awarded a grant for Children In Need to enable us to start to redesign our services for young people. Thanks to this funding we have been conducting research with young people to enable us to understand and shape a service that suits them and implementing changes that they have suggested.

As a result of the work so far we have made some big changes to what offer. We have created and implemented a Gillick Competency Policy that enables young people to self-refer into our service. We have set up our weekly Peer Support group and we run a special Activity Group during the school holidays. We also have a new Re-Fresh logo which was designed by the Action Research group.

We want to continue to Action Research with young people as we expand our group services into Kendal and Barrow and we are keen to hear from any young people aged 12yrs ( and in high school) to 17yrs who would like to be a member of our research group.

The group meets on one Sunday per month at a variety of locations.

If you would like to find out more about this group please contact Lou on or text her on 07856355337
