Former student aiming for triathlon hat-trick!
A former Lancaster University student is aiming for a fantastic fundraising hat-trick for CancerCare when he takes part in his third Try-a-Tri next month!
Tom Booth, 22, first took part in the University’s beginner’s triathlon in 2018 with members of his rugby team which selected CancerCare as its chosen charity as players were keen to support an organisation that supported people in the local community. n
This will be Tom’s third year of taking part and they have thus far raised a wonderful £1,500 for CancerCare.
The Try-a-Tri is a fun, entry-level event which takes place on the 5 & 6 September and entrants can take part either individually as part of a team. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s event has gone “virtual” meaning people can take part in the challenge wherever they like and the swimming element has been replaced with the option to complete a 10 minute activity of their choice.
The 20k bike ride and 5k run remain the same with the only change being entrants can do them wherever they like.
Tom persuaded a few more of his friends to take part in last year’s triathlon and he has since been keen to find out more about the work CancerCare does providing free professional counselling and therapy for anyone affected by cancer and bereavement in north Lancashire and south Cumbria
“I've learned a lot about CancerCare and what they stand for. What impressed me most was their understanding of how being diagnosed with cancer may not be life ending but is always life changing, and how it's just as much of a challenge to build up the family's confidence and spirits again after experiencing such a life changing event,” said Tom.
“The Try-a-Tri is a great a chance to support a charity which, like many others, has had to find new ways to help local families due to the current situation and, on top of that it is a way to keep fit and have fun!” he added.
