Did you know that CancerCare’s work in Barrow & Furness began with a gift in a Will?
When Mr John Dixon Wiper of Dalton in Furness included a gift in his Will to CancerCare, asking that the funds be used in his local area, he sparked something remarkable!
It was many years later, when Mr Dixon Wiper sadly passed away, that CancerCare received a letter notifying us of his special gift.
At the time, CancerCare’s support services for local families coping with cancer or bereavement were delivered from two centres in Lancaster & Kendal, as well as in the two hospitals within those localities. Mr Dixon Wiper’s donation provided funding for a new project to make the same support available to families in the Barrow & Furness community.
This kindness has meant that, over the past 4 years, over 470 families in this area have been able to access a vital support when facing the life-changing impact of cancer or loss. Now 4 years on, thanks to incredible support from the local community as well as further funding from The Sir John Fisher Foundation & the BAE Give As You Earn scheme, we have opened our first permanent centre in the heart of Barrow and are here to stay; ensuring that anyone in the Barrow & Furness region will have a safe place to turn when dealing with the distress of a diagnosis, side-effects of treatment, responsibility of caring for a family member or the grief of losing a loved one.
This is a true legacy that Mr Dixon Wiper has left and we will be eternally grateful.
