Celebrating 30 years of CancerCare at the Diamonds & Pearls Spring Ball

Local cancer support charity CancerCare held an elegant evening of celebrations at their Diamonds & Pearls Spring Ball set in Morecambe’s stunning Midland Hotel on Friday 11th April.

DSC 4505 001Ball guests enjoyed a champagne reception followed by a sumptuous three course dinner with live music provided by local soul band The Groove Cutters. The event managed to raise an amazing £32,000 for CancerCare on the night which included a very special live auction with prizes under the hammer including a half carat diamond ring and a pair of Cartier Pearl earrings.

Guests were joined by CancerCare supporters including main sponsors FGH Security and Lakeland Ltd who also presented a £15,000 cheque to the charity. Professor McIllmurray – a local doctor who founded the charity back in 1983 - and CancerCare Patron Lady Anne Shuttleworth were also in attendance.


CancerCare began life as a small volunteer led telephone helpline service DSC 4342 002based in an office within Royal Lancaster Infirmary offering support to local cancer patients and their families in an informal, relaxed manner.

The unique charity has since evolved and grown in size to now offer a wide range of free professional support services from their centres based in Lancaster and Kendal including counselling, hypnotherapy, aromatherapy massage, creative art therapies and exercise classes. The charity also offers a dedicated Children and Young People’s Service for children as young as three.

CancerCare’s experienced and qualified staff team have helped over 22,000 local people affected by cancer and other life limiting conditions living in North Lancashire and South Lakeland throughout the past 30 years.

Proceeds raised from the Ball will help ensure local people affected by the impact of cancer or any other life limiting condition can access free professional help and support whenever they need it.”

All CancerCare services are provided free of charge can only continue to do so as a direct result of fundraising and the generous donations from local people. CancerCare is 95% funded by charitable donations. CancerCare work closely with the NHS but only receive a small amount of funding from them each year.
