CancerCare's 10th annual Cross Bay Challenge will take place in Flookburgh on Sunday 28th June, offering participants a truly unique way to experience the stunning scenery of Morecambe Bay with a choice of a half marathon, family friendly 7 mile walk and new for 2015 - a cycle challenge for anyone who has their own ‘Fat Bike’.

Sponsored by Ghyllside Cycles in Ambleside, the new Cross Bay Fat Bike challenge will cover a distance of 13 miles and will head out onto the Bay from the Flookburgh foreshore.

Ghyllside CyclesKevin Garner from Ghyllside Cycles says:

“Fat Bikes are basically the bicycle equivalent of a monster truck with two big balloon like tyres which float over obstacles. First developed in Alaska to allow riders to conquer heavy snow and rocky mountain trails, Fat Bikes are fast becoming a common sight here in the UK.”

“Morecambe Bay offers the ideal terrain for Fat Biking so we are very excited about riding out across the local sands. CancerCare is a great local charity and we are very proud to be part of the event’s 10th Anniversary celebrations.”

Jane Staniford, CancerCare Fundraiser and Cross Bay event organiser adds:

“We are so excited to celebrate 10 years of our Cross Bay Challenge and the addition of Fat Biking to our line-up is fantastic!”

“One of our biggest fundraising events of the year, the Cross Bay Challenge raises much needed funds to support our vital work helping local families affected by cancer & life limiting conditions across North Lancashire & South Lakeland.”

“Whilst there are lots of Morecambe Bay charity walks taking place throughout the summer, our event offers something that little bit different with the choice of not one, but three unique ways to enjoy the stunning landscape of the Bay. There really is something for everyone.”

“A favourite with runners, our Cross Bay Half Marathon is consistently voted as one of the UK's top rated races and the only known race in the world to cross a tidal bay. And this year’s 7 mile family friendly circular walk will lead out across the Bay towards Ulverston and Cowpren Point and out towards Chapel Island. As always, all our challenges are supported by our experienced Bay guides and safety team.”

This year’s Cross Bay Challenge will start and finish at the Flookburgh foreshore with a beer tent, hog roast and refreshments at the finish to welcome runners, walkers and cyclists. Everyone who takes part will also receive a CancerCare Cross Bay Challenge medal.

The event has raised over quarter of a million pounds to date for CancerCare whose free support services include professional Counselling and a Children & Young People's Service. CancerCare has two dedicated centres based in Kendal (The Lakes Centre, Blackhall Road) and in Lancaster (Slynedales, Slyne Road) and also provides outreach services in local hospitals including Furness and Westmorland Generals.
