Stars come out for the 9th Annual Kendal StarWalk!

Nearly 400 supporters took part in our annual night walk event in Kendal on Saturday 9th May to help raise over £30,000 for CancerCare!

Nearly 400 supporters took part in our annual night walk event in Kendal on Saturday 9th May to help raise over £30,000 for CancerCare!

Our 9th annual StarWalk event offered participants the chance to run, walk or jog either a sponsored 5K or 15K route through the town centre streets .

"Where's me keys...where's me phone?"

The event kicked off at Kendal Leisure Centre at 8pm with live entertainment provided by Danny Matthews and the Bay Radio team alongside special guest Mr Zip from Britain’s Got Talent and local Fitness Instructor Natalie Gay who led a very energetic warm up!

A huge balloon drop also gave StarWalkers the opportunity to nab themselves a special prize.

Our winners were:

1st Rose Newport who won 6months free membership to Sanctuary Health Club at the Riverside Hotel

2nd Max Percival who won a goody bag from Boots the Chemist

3rd Charlotte Simpson who won Afternoon Tea at the Castle Green Hotel 

Mayor Clare and Robert WebbStarWalkers then formed a giant conga line as they made their way outside to join official event starters Kendal Mayor Clare and CancerCare Chairman Robert Webb for the final StarWalk countdown.

First to cross the 5K finish line was Tommy Kljin aged 13  with his family friend Rachael from Endmoor with Paul Percival-Smith (pictured below) finishing first in the 15K in a time of 1 hour 17 mins.

63 year old Jackie Hardaker (pictured below) from Staveley also took part in the 15K alongside her sister Pip.

She said, “CancerCare really helped me last year when I was recovering from breast cancer so I wanted to give something back. They are a local charity too– we are very lucky to have them here in Kendal. We’ve managed to raise over £2,000 for them so far.” 

Tom Owen-Jones and Danielle Manning from Kendal who were also fundraising for CancerCare said “We took part in the StarWalk this year as cancer is an issue close to our hearts. They really are an incredible charity.”

Event organiser Richard Cogger said: “I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came out to support us. It was great seeing so many families of all ages taking part again this year. Together we’ve managed to raise a fantastic amount for CancerCare with sponsorship still coming in!”

“I’d also like to give a special mention to Sarah and her team from Windermere School (below) who did a sterling job serving refreshments to our tired and hungry StarWalkers as well as our main sponsors Bay Radio and Kendal Leisure Centre.

First aider Helena Weiss made a special effort to join us on the night having just landed back in the UK after an overseas trip – she said she wouldn’t have missed it for the world because CancerCare helped her so much when she had breast cancer.”

Everyone who took part in this year’s StarWalk received a winner’s medal, t-shirt, Kendal Mint Cake and a sausage bap for their efforts.

282G6106 01To date, our StarWalk event has raised over half a million pounds for CancerCare enabling us to continue providing our vital free services across North Lancashire and South Lakeland.
