Some of you might have already read Jackie’s story earlier this year which detailed her fight back to fitness after recovering from breast cancer.

A previous CancerCare client, Jackie spoke about the many ways in which CancerCare helped and supported her through some really difficult times. A keen fell walker and mountain adventurer, Jackie decided she wanted to take on our 15k Challenge at the StarWalk event this year and help raise funds for us by way of saying thank you.

Together with her sister Pip they raised an amazing £2,300 for CancerCare! Wow! She sent us this message after the event:

“It was a great event on Saturday. I wouldn't have worn a flashing pink tiara if it hadn't been for my sister and her partner Maggie! We had a lot of fun. They did great to get round the shorter route, given the state of Maggie's knees and between us we have now raised over £2,300, far exceeding my expectations.

I was cold at the start so decided to power walk as fast as I could and surprised even myself with a very quick time of 2hrs and 20 min. Still can't believe it! I am a fast walker but not usually that quick! It helped me to overtake people and the quicker time helped my bad knee, though I was a sweaty mess by the end!!

I walked with different people at the start and then from the 6km mark with two absolutely delightful students girls aged 17/18. We were walking more or less the same pace so they kindly let me stay with them until almost the end.

Star Walk 7They wanted to run in over the last 10 metres and good on them as they had no friends or family waiting for them, having decided only two days before to do it. They are a credit to their families. Well done to everyone, including the man we all met who had a kidney transplant only two months ago. Such a great cause!”
