Neil's Weekly Blog! #1

on Friday, 06 March 2015.

neil 1My name is Neil Townsend and I've just been appointed as CancerCare's New Chief Executive - welcome to my weekly Blog!

Over the past few weeks I've been spending time getting to know all our staff, volunteers, Trustees and learning more about the fantastic work CancerCare do in our local community.

This week I had two very good sessions with two of our Trustees. Firstly Tony Gattrel, a lecturer and former Dean at Lancaster University,  has been leading on a useful piece of research into where our clients come from and how this relates to the incidences of cancer.  My second meeting was with David Elliot, a retired GP who has had a long association with CancerCare so his insight  was really helpful.

On Wednesday I then headed North to Kendal to attend a meeting of the Kendal BID consortium, - a group of businesses in Kendal who are trying to drive a renaissance of local high street shopping. A useful link for CancerCare into the local business community and one which we will continue to support.

I then joined in with CancerCare's weekly Singing Group at their early evening get together,. It was so inspiring to meet a number of our clients at different stages on their own cancer journey but reaping the benefits of a good old sing. Super! And I will return!

CancerCare night out

Some of the CancerCare team went out for a meal to Quite Simply French Restaurant in Lancaster this week- it was great!

We've also been spending time this week looking at our current volunteer policy and how we should encourage existing and previous clients to get involved as volunteers - our clients are obviously our biggest supporters who are often  keen to  "give something back to CancerCare" so volunteering is a great way for them to do just that!

I am starting to give some real thought into the potential shape of a 3 year forward plan for CancerCare. To help this I have asked everyone in the organisation to email me one word they'd use to describe what CancerCare means to them.  More on this to follow!

Until next week....Neil
