CancerCare at the Child Bereavement UK Conference

on Wednesday, 18 March 2015.

CancerCare Counsellor Samreen Khan attended  Child Bereavement UK's National  'Matters of Life and Death' Conference in London last week. The conference examined the importance of early intervention for bereaved families in areas of deprivation with key note speakers including MP Alan Johnson an d novelist  and poet Michael Rosen.

Key statistics:

Every 22 minutes in the UK a child loses a parent
78% of 11-16 year olds have been bereaved of someone significant
Each year almost 3,000 children and young people die between the ages of 1 and 19 as a result of illness or accident – that is 8 children per day.

Samreen said "It was great to attend the conference and I had the opportunity to share with the audience and speakers about  CancerCare's Children & Young People's Service within a national setting."

"But the highlight  for me was meeting Michael Rosen, who spoke about the death of his son, and how this loss inspired him to write his children books about grief."

"Michael also signed my copy of his fantastic 'Sad Book'” for all the  children at CancerCare."
