Chief Executive Neil's Weekly Blog

Hello. I wrote my first weekly blog almost three years ago. It was my attempt at bringing topical news about CancerCare and my own varied working week to life.

Since then both internal and external communication would appear to be much better.

Thank you for the feedback that I get about my blog and other ways in which we communicate the amazing and varied amount of innovation and work that is going on across CancerCare.

Please ask questions and continue to give feedback be it about my blog, the Senior Management Team (SMT) bi-monthly review, the Fundraising team update, our use of social media, website or Twitter.

This week I have spent time with each member of our Fundraising team, talking over and agreeing their work priorities for the next few months. The direction and foundations are strong, with lots to work on and enjoy in the year ahead.

On Wednesday I paid a really useful visit to see Rachel Minshull, our Barrow and Furness Development Officer. We caught up on the day to day operations of our centre and the exciting plans for continued development of our services in and around the town.

Our conversation reminded me of the journey we have been on and how, by working in close partnership with a range of people, we can really make things happen.

Partnerships internally between teams and externally are vital to our continued success. Working at them takes time and energy but the benefits are worth it.

Sometimes a simple email or phone call to a colleague or a partner agency is all it takes for a free flow of effective conversation – I call it keeping yourself and others in the loop.

As you may know, 2018 marks the 35th birthday of CancerCare.

It would be good to hear back from you about any ideas you might have on how we can celebrate or mark this milestone.

We are keen to do a range of things so any ideas would be welcome. These can relate to media, fundraising ideas or just having some kind of party.

Please have a think and email me any suggestions which we can then give some thought to.

The weekend ahead is a fairly quiet one for Alan and I, although we have a rearranged lunch with friends in Burton in Kendal tomorrow.

Whatever you are doing have a good one!

Neil Townsend, Chief Executive
