Do's and Don'ts

Good fundraising is all about not re-inventing the wheel. If there is already a proven method or template, Use it!

DO

  • Include the Charity's name (CancerCare) and charity registration number (1120048) on all promotional materials, including posters, flyers and press releases. Please feel free to ask the fundraising office for any help with producing materials.
  • Double check your whole event for any hazards.
  • Set up a fundraising page at www.justgiving.com if you are doing a sponsored event.

If you have access to the internet you can raise your sponsorship money without even leaving your chair...

No more dealing with cash or cheques, no more hassling friends and family.

It's easy to create your own internet sponsor page which you can then email to all your friends and get them to donate quickly and securely online with a credit or debit card. Plus, online donations from UK taxpayers collect a 28% tax bonus!

Simply press the Just Giving button on our site to set up and personalise your page.

By creating your own online sponsor page you can:

    • Email the page to all your friends
    • Watch your total grow on screen
    • Include a photo and personal message
    • Update your target amount as often as you like
    • 28% tax bonus added to donations
    • No need to deal with cash or cheques
  • Pay the money raised to CancerCare as soon as possible after the event.
  • Consider first-aid provision and, where possible, have a trained first-aider present at your event.
  • Provide wheelchair access and cater for the needs of the visually impaired and hard of hearing.
  • Check out references and relevant qualifications of any organiser or supplier you're thinking of using for an event. Check that caterers have relevant food hygiene certificates before considering them for an event. Preparing the food yourself? Then try and get someone involved who has completed the basic food hygiene certificate course. Remember you are responsible for any food you've prepared, even if you give it away!
  • Hold a raffle during your main event. This is known as a Small Lottery and does not require registration as long as:
    • There is no cash prize
    • No more than £250 is spent on prizes
    • The sale, issue and announcement of results are carried out during the main event and on the premises.
  • HAVE FUN!!!

DON'T

  • Hold street collections without a local authority license.
  • Sell raffle tickets outside of an event without a license.
  • send chain letters or get involved with pyramid selling in the name of CancerCare.
  • Sell Alcohol - If you are planning to sell alcohol at an event you'll need to be covered by a liquor licence. Many public venues already have these licences which solves the problem. It is also legal to sell tickets and then exchange your ticket for a drink.
  • Get Stressed - Cancercare's fundraising team is always there to help solve any problems you encounter. Just ask.
