Who We Are

CancerCare was established in 1983 to provide support to cancer patients and those around them in an informal, relaxed manner.

Facing cancer, whether as a patient, carer, or family member can be a life changing experience. CancerCare helps people as they come to terms with these changes through providing emotional, social and psychological support.

We offer support to people of all ages and we are acknowledged for our work with children and young people affected by Cancer via our dedicated Children and Young Peoples Service.

Our support services are all offered free of charge by experienced, qualified staff.

CancerCare is 95% funded by charitable donations.

Where We Work

CancerCare is a local charity and our support services are concentrated throughout North Lancashire, South Lakeland and surrounding areas. We cover this wide area from two local centres, our head office ‘Slynedales’ near Lancaster and ‘The Lakes Centre’ in Kendal.

Both Slynedales and The Lakes Centre have dedicated facilities for individual and group therapies.

Our Vision

CancerCare will deliver compassionate, intelligent and flexible support to meet the diverse
individual needs of people living with life limiting conditions throughout our local communities.

Our Guiding Principles

CancerCare is a dynamic local charity, dedicated to supporting people affected by cancer and life limiting conditions.

Our clients and their needs will be central to all the services and support offered by CancerCare.

CancerCare will work in partnership with healthcare professionals in the delivery and onward referral of clients to ensure good professional care at all times.

CancerCare will provide personal, professionally managed and flexible services in safe and appropriate settings that meet the needs of our clients.

CancerCare strives to be a learning organisation for its staff, volunteers and others, through current evidence based best practice.

Meet The Team

Lynne Stafford – Chief Executive
Joined CancerCare in 2011 because she wanted to be part of an organisation helping to support local people through difficult times in their lives. Originally Lynne trained and worked as a nurse in England and Uganda, before working as a senior manager across the North West region within the NHS and charitable organisations. Lynne spends her spare time trying different things… and enjoys good food, wine and books.

Alison Stainthorpe – Head of Operations
Alison joined CancerCare in May 2010, following a long career with the MOD where, as a Civil Servant, she spent time working in the UK, Germany and Cyprus. Since joining CancerCare, Alison’s role has developed significantly and now in her capacity as Head of Operations, she is a major contributor to the smooth running and development of the organisation. Outside of work, Alison enjoys reading, running and renovating her house with help from her two dogs.

Pam Lewis – Information and Regulatory Lead
Prior to joining CancerCare Pam worked for many years in both NHS and independent sector hospitals before joining a training company specialising in team development. Pam has been working at CancerCare for over seven years and for the past two years has been leading a change management programme. Living in the Lake District, Pam is a keen fell walker.

Jane Staniford – Fundraising Team Leader
Jane joined the CancerCare Fundraising Team in January 2011 following a career in the hospitality industry where she enjoyed organising functions for customers. She now leads CancerCare’s Fundraising Team and together they organise the many fantastic events that take place in our local area every year. Jane has two grown up children in their 20’s, who still take up much more of her time than she bargained for and enjoys long walks with her very excitable Cocker Spaniel Rory.

Emma Jan – Head of Client Services
Emma joined CancerCare in 2009 and in 2010 became Co-ordinator for The Children and Young Peoples Service. Prior to joining CancerCare, Emma worked as a childrens counsellor within a Secondary School. As Head of Client Services, Emma now oversees all therapeutic work done throughout CancerCare. Emma's biggest personal challenge was early in 2013, when she did a tandem skydive to raise funds for CancerCare’s Children and Young Peoples Service.
