Therapies
You may be a cancer patient, a carer, a family member, or have lost someone through cancer. We offer a range of psychological, complementary and creative therapies, as well as social group activities. CancerCare provides support and information, free of charge, for people affected by cancer in North Lancashire and South Cumbria.
You can find out more about our therapies, and ask for a referral, either from a health professional working with you (for instance your GP, Nurse, or consultant), or by contacting us directly.
Following referral we will offer you a chance to have a first meeting with one of our therapists. They will help to clarify your needs and to agree with you which therapy or group may be best for you.
If you decide that you want to go ahead, we will then ask a therapist to contact you to arrange some sessions, or to invite you to join a group. Usually a specific number of sessions will be agreed at your first meeting, and this will be reviewed with your therapist as things progress.
You may want to try different therapies as your needs change.
All of our therapy services are offered by professional and experienced practitioners.
Psychological Therapies
Counselling provides an opportunity to talk with a professional counsellor who offers to explore your concerns in a respectful, supportive and confidential setting
Hypnotherapy teaches relaxation of mind and body. It reduces anxiety and depression, and assists in the management of pain. It helps prepare for and reduce the side effects of medical treatment, and encourages self-confidence and resourcefulness
Expressive Arts uses paint, clay and other materials (including writing) to explore and share difficult experiences through creativity. This is usually offered as group work

Complementary Therapies
Alexander Technique uses light touch and simple explanation to teach people to recognise how we hold stress and tension in our bodies, and how we can let go of this to find greater ease and well-being.
Aromatherapy uses gentle massage with an individual prescription of aromatic oils to relieve symptoms and to promote relaxation and general well-being.
Massage uses systematic manipulation of the body’s soft tissues to enhance circulation and breathing, release muscle tension, improve sleep, modify anxiety, reduce pain, and produce deep relaxation.
Yoga works with postures, breathing, and meditation to teach ways of living more harmoniously in the world, and can be a pathway towards a deeper understanding of self. Usually offered as group work.
