A Brief Introduction

Slynedales centre showing the planned future extension

CancerCare is a local organisation formed in 1983 by a small group of volunteers and practitioners from the caring professions. Since becoming a registered charity in 1985, it has grown to be the largest charitable organization of its kind in the UK providing local support to people facing cancer at all stages of the cancer journey.

CancerCare provides services throughout North Lancashire and South Cumbria, with centres at Slynedales, Lancaster and the Lakes Centre, Kendal. Both centres offer emotional, social and psychological support, individually or in groups, together with advice, information, practical help, and an extensive range of complementary therapies. Some services are also available in Barrow and district. All our services are available to patients, carers and family members.

Weekly Friendship Group meetings are currently held at Ambleside, Kendal, Lancaster and Morecambe. They offer a friendly point of contact and valuable mutual support for people with cancer, their carers, people bereaved by cancer and those who wish to know more about CancerCare and its services.

CancerCare is a valued partner within the local NHS Cancer Network and works closely with other local providers, national cancer networks and key research initiatives. We only offer services that complement the treatment and advice offered by medical and nursing practitioners as part of a developing integrated care system for cancer patients and their families
